Trees are the making of gardens around Rogate — and the one part of a garden where poor work does lasting damage. Our tree work is carried out by a trained arborist, properly insured, with every cut made for the long-term health and shape of the tree, not just this year’s tidy-up.

Rafi’s training

Rafi holds a City & Guilds Level 2 Technical Certificate in Forestry and Arboriculture, awarded with Merit at Chichester College’s Brinsbury Campus. His practical qualifications include chainsaw maintenance and cross-cutting, felling small trees up to 380mm, and tree climbing and aerial rescue. Read more about Rafi’s training and qualifications.

What we do

  • Crown reduction — bringing an overgrown canopy back in scale with the garden while keeping a natural shape, never topping.
  • Crown lifting and thinning — raising the canopy to let light onto lawns and borders, or thinning congested growth so wind can pass through.
  • Formative and fruit tree pruning — young trees shaped early for a sound structure; apples and pears pruned for health and crop.
  • Deadwooding — removing dead and hanging limbs before they choose their own moment to come down.
  • Small tree felling and removal — straight felling or careful section-by-section dismantling where space is tight, with logs and brash chipped, stacked for firewood or removed as you prefer.
  • Storm damage — making broken trees safe and tidy after bad weather.

Protected trees — checked before we start

Rogate and much of the surrounding area sit inside the South Downs National Park, and many local trees are covered by Tree Preservation Orders or stand in conservation areas. Working on a protected tree without consent is an offence — so before any significant work we check the tree’s status and, where consent is needed, help you make the application. It’s a routine part of the job for us, not a complication.

When to prune

Most trees are best pruned in winter dormancy, when the structure is visible and stress on the tree is lowest — though there are exceptions we plan around, like walnuts and birches that bleed sap in late winter, and stone fruits that should only be cut in summer to avoid silver leaf disease. We’ll always tell you the right season for your tree, even if it means booking us for later in the year.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my tree has a Tree Preservation Order?

Your local authority keeps the register — for most of our area that’s Chichester District Council or the South Downs National Park Authority. We check as a matter of course before quoting for significant work.

Do you remove the wood and branches?

Whatever suits you: we can chip and remove everything, leave logs cut to length for firewood, or stack habitat piles in a corner for wildlife.

Can you take a large tree down completely?

We fell and dismantle smaller garden trees ourselves. For very large or high-risk trees we’ll say so plainly and can recommend specialist colleagues — we’d rather refer a job than take one beyond our kit.

Is your tree work insured?

Yes — we carry full public liability insurance for tree work, and we’re happy to show the certificate with your quote.

Where we work: Rogate, Petersfield, Midhurst, Liss, Liphook, South Harting, Trotton, Stedham, Easebourne, Fernhurst, Chichester and the surrounding West Sussex and Hampshire border countryside.
